So I like looking back at old LJ entries sometimes and occasionally they are amazingly apt. Ten years ago today I reviewed Edward II and talked about how Twelfth Night was going on tour to America. I'm seeing Edward II (NT this time not Globe) on Monday and Twelfth Night (actually the same production) is opening on Broadway next month!

You can buy a DVD of that Twelfth Night! They did it for Globe On Screen. It's not the same as seeing it live, I know, but still, pretty amazing. (And I saw that US tour ten years ago! Which was EVEN MORE AMAZING. I WAS SIX FEET AWAY FROM MARK RYLANCE.)

Personally I am not sure I will ever forgive NT Live for not doing that Edward II, which is apparently brilliant, but apparently it is TOO HOT FOR NT LIVE. Or something.

Oh I saw it 10 years ago as well and again last year at the Globe I'm just throwing a temper tantrum because I want to see the cast changes they've made for the Broadway run- Samuel Barnett was Sebastian and instead he's going to be Viola. It's the most amazing production though isn't it? And seeing Mark Rylance live will NEVER get old. Never.

NT Live is pretty great generally but they should really just do all their plays, or at least all the plays in the Olivier, as standard! But I have been hearing so many things about this production I don't really know who to believe any more!

I honestly thought it was going to Broadway with an identical cast. I'm sad now. I'd love to see Sam as Viola!

Me too! I should have realised that there must be some changes- after all I know perfectly well that James Garnon is in Much Ado (though it's interesting that Mark Rylance will be in the States when that's running here I guess once it's opened it's fine though).

But yes. Super sad.

That is another very sad thing. I know they're very good to us with DVDs and amazing productions but it's still sad when you miss an awesome cast or can't go back and watch an incredible performance.

I will always be a little bit sad that there isn't a DVD of the original Twelfth Night cast. Actually the ORIGINAL Middle Temple Hall cast and then another one of the Globe cast from 10+ years ago.
