It weird, because I dislike the Hitchhiker books and I totally don't like the Discworld novels anymore, but I completely get a kick out of both "holidays." I think my geek cred is suffering now.
I never heard the series, for whatever reason (it's not like I couldn't ...). But I love the movie that came out recently, which probably makes every "true" fan cry. OH WELL.
Well, yeah. But I USED to love Discworld. I just tried to read one of his books recently it was so tedious that I returned it to the library.
(speaking of, what did you think of the latest Barbie Barbie adventure? ) I ... haven't seen any of them since I first found the website. I don't even remember where to look ...
Actually I think I liked the movie better than the books in many ways, the books just had a tendency to club every tiny throw away joke to death through repetition and explanation and with the film and radio (and TV show) there wasn't enough time to do that so it felt like it had a lighter touch.
I think PTerry and the Discworld maybe peaked? Or at least the more recent ones have had more serious stuff to comedy perhaps? I still enjoy them but it's different.
Towel Day is a day for Hihchikers Guide to the Galaxy fans to celebrate the life and works of Douglas Adams. Based on the imporance of towels in the HHGTG and this quote:
A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough
