As I keep taking half-days off work for appointments the rat catcher (who never comes damn him) you my not just my sympathy but very sincere empathy. I'd repeat the stories of my rat encounters but they might make it even worse to sleep at night...

I've had mice. They won't bother you, just eat your food. Steel wool is barbed wire for mice - put it in the holes they're coming in and out of, and hold it in place with gaffer tape - our mice never got past it, and it got rid of them.
