Media: Fic Title: Awkward Friend: Rachel Berry Rating: T Spoilers (If any): Up to 2x4 Duets Warnings (If any): N/A Word Count: 1300 Summary: Kurt and Rachel bond. Awkwardky. With recipes.
Awww. This is adorable. I love Rachel's blunt honesty here.
“We used to be rivals. You probably heard me ranting about him. But we've bonded now that we're no longer fighting over Finn, or solos. We've been sharing recipes! I'm going to have some great new ones to try on you and Papa.”
LOL. Only Rachel would say all that in front of Kurt. And poor Mr. and Mr. Berry.
I love the little bit at the end about Burt, and the contrast between that and Rachel's dynamic with her Dad.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I battled this sucker from the day we found out our characters, until today. I haven't really written anything in months since I had a lot of RL problems going on, and I've only written one Glee fic before this, so trying to get into Rachel and Kurt's head, and write them as friends was weird.
My dad died in May, and was in the hospital from 8 months before, so...there was major stress. I'm doing better now. I pretty much did this challenge to try to get back into fic writing, since my muses have been pretty dead for most of the last year.
I actually ended up loving them together too. They're different, but when they're not trying to sabotage each other, or rip out each others throats for Finn or solos, they're adorable. I can see them emailing each other recipes, and slowly bonding more, maybe over musicals and other things they have in common (heh, I know nothing about musicals, so I went with food which I'm better with, having been raised by chefs).
I loved the dynamic you had here... it wasn't the easy friendship that is often portrayed, but it workeed better for that. They have enough in common to really connect, but each is awkward enough that it still isn't quite smooth. I'd love to read more!
Thanks! I figured, even with the cute singing together and hand holding in Duets, they wouldn't suddenly be all BFFs and talking like Kurt and Mercedes or anything, it'd still be all awkward and weird.
Hee thanks. I was sort of having a freak out about it. I've never really written Rachel before, and only written Kurt once, and Rachel isn't my favorite character (I don't hate her or anything, like I hate some characters in other fandoms, I just wants to smack her upside the head sometimes when she does really, really, really obnoxious, like her weekly storm outs if she didn't get the solos, or psychotic like sending Sunshine to a crackhouse things like in Auditions. And other times I want to pet her and feed her cookies, when she's sweet and nice and adorable) so had no idea how I was going to write them as friends. Luckily the nice little muses in my head started talking about food, and Rachel started babbling and it flowed from there.
Yeah, Rachel sort of lacks the internal filter that most people have, that stops them from saying those kind of things. Or at least from saying them outloud. And she likes hand holding! Even if the other people is going "WTF?".
Aww, I loved getting a glimpse of one of Rachel's dads. I liked the dynamic with Mr. Berry and Rachel and Kurt all in the room. And how Kurt was all like what is this cuddling aaaah. And I especially liked that they didn't get along perfectly because they wouldn't, especially not at first. There would be awkward silences and misunderstandings, and I like that you're realistic about it.
Thank you! Glad it's gone down so well, lol. Poor Kurt. He's not a cuddly person, while Rachel totally is. Or at least, when it crosses her mind she wants to cuddly someone...she's not gonna waste time asking, she's just gonna be in your lap before you can blink.
Rachel moved from her chair to the couch next to Kurt. She took his hand, and curled against his side. “I'm glad we're friends now.” Kurt blinked at Rachel, not used to sudden cuddling without warning. I giggled so hard at this. Could totally picture it. Even though they're both stunning diva bitches with strong opinions and similar taste in men, they're very different when it comes to being affectionate or honest.
Yay for bonding over their strict diets! Very cute.
Thank you! It's fin how they're both wildly different, but very similar at the same time. Like Rachel, would totally have tried the same makeover sabotage(well Kurt wouldn't have said yes to her, but she would try!), if she'd thought of it first when they were both trying to win Finn over.

I love the idea of Rachel and Kurt as friends, and I really like the balance- that they're still working out some (a lot) of kinks.
