Animals inherit their markings. You can breed cats with white paws, dogs with spots (dalmations) or (eventually) horses with splashes of white on their heads or even vertical stripes on their flanks (zebras, anyone?) and so on

Reminds me of the Robert Rankin book that mentioned a man who had a dog and most people couldn't decide if he was a poodle or a greyhound* and it turned out the dog was in fact both - the left side was a poodle and the right side was a greyhound. Hehe *the actual dogs might have been different in the book, but you get the idea.
If anyone can remember the name of the RR book this little snippet was from, let me know!
