Hey, now Athens in Greece may've had a high population of stray dogs, but they have a good policy about them. Rather than catch and put them down, the dogs are caught, fixed, needled and collared with tags so people know they're okay to play with. They're released back to the streets (the dogs are damn smart, too. I saw one cross the road with the lights) and the locals help them out. I saw businesses with bowls of water and kibble outside the door.
As opposed to America who just doesn't put any effort into anything and wouldn't doubt they have the highest amount of kill shelters per pet population or something like that.
Yeah. There was a LOT of stray dogs and I asked our tour guide when I noticed what looked like an animal control vehicle drive by.
I just wish they could get the cat population under control. :/ Most of the national monument places had TONS of FERAL, not stray, cats. Very few were friendly and one of the only ones that was, was preggers.
I wish they'd take up the same policy with the cats as they have for the dogs.
The cats I've run into in Greece were all really friendly, but they're horribly thin, and the locals chase them away :/ WHen at Corfu, there were a pair of cats strolling by a restaurant/café where we were sitting outside eating dinner, and one of the people working there started chasing them and and yelling, trying to scare them away. Poor things were just looking for some food and attention.

That's a good policy in Greece, though! I wish everywhere with a stray "problem" would adopt that policy, too.
