Of course, the problem was that there was someone coming out of a store nearby who wasn't looking where he was going.

Well, that wasn't strictly true. He was paying a great deal of attention to where he was going in order not to run into anyone else in the crowd. It was just that he'd come to a point where it was walk into Khrista or walk into someone else, and he hadn't seen Khrista. Unless she stopped short, things weren't going to be pretty.

Marcus blinked, looking surprised. "What's so funny?" he asked, looking genuinely confused. He hadn't expected her to spontaneously burst out laughing like that.

He glanced over at Khrista and the girl he could only assume was her sister, shrugging slightly.

"Sorry, I didn't know you had a date~" she said, giggling. She likewise glanced back at Ica, and seeing that she was starting another game, decided it would be the perfect excuse to leave her twin alone. "Hey, Ica, don't start without me!"

Khrista was shaking her head. "Guess it didn't take long for our sisters to find each other, huh." Although it really was quite the coincidence.

"I guess not." He ducked his head, trying to hide the slight flush at that "date" crack. "I can't say I'm really surprised. Nausy's never had trouble finding friends."

"They seem to share the same interests, too," Khrista observed. "I just hope Nausy's a good sport, because Ica's got a competitive streak a mile wide. Even if it's just a game, she doesn't like to lose."

She looked around awkwardly, trying to find something to do. They couldn't just stand there and watch over their sisters the whole afternoon, could they?

Marcus chuckled softly. "Either they'll be best friends or they'll hate each other once one of them win; Nausy's the same way."

He glanced around awkwardly. "Hey, um... you want to get something to eat?" he asked hesitantly.

She shrugged a little. "Sure. I'm not really doing anything, anyway, apart from the obvious babysitting." She paused for a moment and attempted to catch Ica's attention, but the other was still too absorbed to notice. Oh, well.

"They'll probably keep each other distracted for a while," he murmured. "When Nausy wants to find me she usually can. They'll be fine." He looked around. "Feel like anything in particular?"

Khrista paused to think about it. "Well, do you have some sort of specialty here? We just moved, so... it would be nice to try something new." She looked a little sheepish. "First time in America, so sue me."

"Mm... I'm not really sure. Apart from Chinese takeout, which I'm pretty sure isn't much like actual food from China." He glanced at her curiously. "I, uh, can't quite place your accent, by the way." He could tell it wasn't Japanese, or... wherever-it-was his dad was from; he'd never been quite clear on that, to the point that occasionally they joked that he was an alien.

"Probably not. We stayed in China for quite sometime, actually," she said with a chuckle at his reference to Chinese takeout.

On his inquiry on her accent, she smiled a little. "Don't worry, you're not the only one. I can't quite place my accent, either." She tucked her hands into the pockets of her jacket as they walked. "Mom's half-American, half-Japanese. But she's been working for the UN, so we practically grew up all over the world, living wherever her job takes us. We spent the most time in China and Spain, but we've also been to France, Japan and some other countries. Moving around's really tough, though. Especially when you have to go to a new school almost every year."

"I'll bet. My mom's Chinese, and my dad refuses to say where he's from. He always dodges the question. Either way, we've lived here since I can remember." He smiled. "So does that mean you'll be living around here for a while?"

"It probably has something to do with that civil war in Hong Kong around two decades ago. That really shook up China's relations with all the other countries, even its place with the Asian Confederation. I wouldn't be surprised if your parents eloped or something," she said with a slight chuckle.

Neither of them knew that 'that civil war in Hong Kong' was something Marcus' mother was more than familiar about.

"Anyway, yeah. We'll be here for a year, at the very least."

"Well, that's nice to hear, at least. Nausy will probably pitch a fit if you move away, though, if the way she's attached herself to your sister means anything." He looked around. "Hm. You can probably get hamburgers anywhere - I wouldn't be surprised if you could get them on the moon by now. Anything catch your eye?"

"That's if they haven't started hating each other yet," she said with a grin.

She likewise looked around. "Nothing in particular, really. Burger and fries sounds good, although chocolate cake - or brownies - would make things so much better."

He nodded his head off to the side. "That shouldn't be too difficult to arrange. The food court's just over that way."
