Lady in Black
Harry went to the funeral, despite his instructions from Dumbledore and Sirius and everyone else who’d warned him not to. He went, hidden under his invisibility cloak and dressed in Dudley’s castaways which barely managed to keep out the summer morning chill.
He placed himself at the back of the congregation, a few rows behind where Cho Chang sat with her family, crying on her mother’s shoulder. The front rows were all crammed full of close friends and relatives, all looking properly solemn except for a few of them, whose tear-tracks and puffy eyes Harry could just make out from his seat.
The sun shone brightly overhead as the Muggle priest spouted off platitudes, and then invited the congregation up to do the same. Harry stood, and listened, thought that none of these people actually knew Cedric. His parents didn’t speak - he supposed that they couldn’t bring themselves to.
When he sat down on a bench outside the churchyard, the cloak slipped off him and lay in a heap on the ground, and he was approached by a lady dressed in regal black. ‘It was you, wasn’t it?’ she asked. ‘It was you all along.’
What went unspoken was this: It was you who he wrote to me about; it was you who brought that radiant smile to his face; it was you who he loved.
Harry nodded mutely, and Cedric’s mother placed a gentle hand on his shoulder and a tearful kiss on his forehead. ‘And I can see that you loved him too,’ she said. ‘He was afraid to love you, you know? That was the only reason why he never told you.’
‘I know,’ Harry managed to choke out. It wasn’t until long after she’d left that he realised he was crying.
