Accuser

Since the Order regrouped, Black has been slumping around headquarters surrounded by a dark cloud of misery. It’s disgusting, really, this self-pity.

Black deserves every drop of punishment he’s been dealt over the years and more. He killed his own best friend, after all, even if Potter was an insufferable brat.

Black ought to have known that Pettigrew was the traitor: Lupin was far too mild to even consider betraying his beloved Marauders, despite the whole werewolf thing.

Yes, Severus thinks as he watches Sirius at Grimmauld Place with nothing but disgust in his eyes. He should have known. And he sticks to that conviction, because it’s easier to deal with than the truth.

Yet there is a constant niggling voice in the back of his mind. It sounds suspiciously like Lucius, and it says: But it was you who told the Dark Lord of the Prophecy, Severus. It was you who had Potter murdered. And you’re glad, aren’t you?

Yes, Severus answers eventually, once he’s rid of Black and Dumbledore, too. Yes: I am glad. And this is the truth.
