Author's Notes: Surprisingly enough, not slash, because Max is a girl. Drabble warnings galore, though.
A Tad Trouble Sleeping
It’s been this way for as long as she can remember; her wings curled around her body, barely protecting her from the chill of the evening, her back aching against the solid, protruding bars of her cage.
And it always, always keeps her awake at night, until she’s gone so long without sleep or proper sustenance that the iron bars feel like velvet cushions and the hard concrete floor is almost a springy mattress to her tired, mutant bones.
But as soon as they’re gone, replaced by a too-soft bed with clean sheets and a thick duvet, she finds sleep even more elusive, as if she’s become so accustomed to her cage that she can’t handle anything else.
‘Can’t sleep?’ he asks, sidling into her room on the first night, and she shakes her head.
‘Me neither. I figured I might be able to stay with you tonight.’
She nods, and smiles at him slightly, and he closes the door behind him and lies down on top of her duvet. Her head curls into his chest, and he wraps his arms around her without thinking.
And within minutes, Fang and Max are both lost in dreamland.
