OMG! We have the same problem with lightning storms! Now I just unplug the modem from the jack whenever I'm done with the internet and plug it back up when I need to get online. Otherwise we end up with a literally burnt modem thinger inside the CPU.

Also just in case you're only checking your flist, I updated the Silk Road circle peeps here. Now with an added bonus edit of stupidity! :P

I feel stupid i didn't even think of taking the phone thingy out of the comp. I didn't know that's what caused the problem. I don't know why it's happening? Lightning has never fried one of my modems before and now I have 2 in less then a month. O_0

And yeah my comp was turned off all day but when I took the modem out it was HOT.

Haha I didn't think of it either until we realized that it was screwing up the phone line as well. Two different modems (my desktop Mac and my husband's laptop PC) had to get fried before we figured it out. We had just moved into a new house, and I guess it's just more vulnerable or something.

I think the problem is an electrical surge that goes through the phone line and hits your modem. If that is technically possible. We took my computer apart and the modem board had a spot about two inches around that had actually been BURNT. Like, it was all dark and crispy.

So now I'm super paranoid about unplugging the modem. Hehe.

I hope it works for you if you try it! The seemingly random modem death was one of the most frustrating things to deal with until we figured it out.

Welll, maybe two inches is a bit of an exaggeration, but it was a big old spot o'crispiness.
