"I have to look at the dictionary so often that it disrupts the reading." Valid.I don't really consider that one valid. The Scarlet Letter was one of the easiest books we read in my two years of English with Mrs. Walker. Personally, I really liked it. That last one was more in general then The Scarlet Letter in particular.

However, I so agree that The Scarlet Letter was an easy read! Chris thinks that I am nuts (or overeducated). He didn't think that it was at all easy to read. Now Chris may be a slow reader, but he can read well. (His skimming comprehension. . .) I think that it may have been a problem with not reading many books with the right cultural terminology or remembering the terminology. Scarlet Letter was easy to read, but there were things that if you weren't familiar with the 1600's, you may have missed. That is the only thing that I can think of that could cause a problem.

I also agree that the teacher shouldn't have to teach anything that they can't stand. On the other hand, being a little too obsessed with a book can be a bit scary for your students. My 11th grade teacher actually had a dress with a scarlet A that she wore every year when her class read the book.
