OOC: The Dream

And the last thing he heard was the crows....

The hoarse cries of the crows made a harsh counterpoint to the low, constant buzz of the flies. The bodies littered the field like so much trash. They were nearly waist high to the little boy that walked through them. He recognized every single face, because he was the one who had killed them all. They stared at him accusingly even as the crows pecked out their dead eyes. Maggots crawled from their mouths like curses, and the droning of the flies filled his mind.

“Aniki!” He woke to see a small face hovering over his own, eyes bright and lively. “Aniki you promised to teach me today.”

“Yes.” The little boy next to him smiled, they held hands as they walked, but he could still hear the crows, mocking him in the distance, taunting him.

“Aniki.” The voice was petulant, he could see the pout without looking at the child. The small hand in his tugged him onward, but the sound of the crows was growing. They demanded a feast.

“I’m sorry, otouto.” He let go of the hand, looked down at a disappointed scowl, and tapped the child’s forehead. “Maybe next time.”

The boy disappeared, crows flew, and the man felt himself buffeted by wings. Black feathers brushed his face, a red eye stared back at him through the wings. “I will help you.”

“He’s off limits.”

“If you say so.” The crows cackled mockingly, rejoicing in the promise of death to come.

“Brother… Why…?”

“I’m sorry….”

“Feed us.” The flock took flight, whirling around him, pecking at his eyes until he could barely see, just black shapes against a blood red moon, and the mad chorus of the carrion birds echoing through his soul.
