On the dole

So I haven't been updating here; I have mostly been posting wee sentences on Facebook. And it came to my notice the other day that most of you probably don't know I've been sacked. They eliminated my position at the hospital. I can't blame them, the money was drying up and we were a department built around expansion, so we got hit hard ( Read more... )

Well, you've been paying taxes for decades to make sure this would be here in case you needed it, so I figure you're free and clear. Personally, I think you'd be nuts to even consider looking for work until after the wedding is behind you, but you always were the multitasker of the family... ;]

My savings ain't where they should be. I should do something about that, especially since the Furd doesn't offer an ESPP for me to cash out. Although I would love for them to offer stock in "Jim Harbaugh will fly the coop for Michigan after this year and our football program will tumble to Vanderbilt level"...

You are accepting help you've offered others; you are also accepting money that *you gave the state* for just such an emergency. And despite that, no, they really make it as monumental a pain in the ass as possible.
*hugs*

I was on unemployment for several weeks back in December - for me, I had to fill out a web form once a week to officially claim that I was able to work, and I was looking for work. I also had to take some classes to help me look for work.

And then, they gave me a choice of what class I wanted to take, the least insulting of which was advice on how to make my resume better. The state employee told me that my resume was way too long. Well, lady, I've already got calls back from search engine company and commercial operating systems company, and I crafted this resume to contain the information that I want to see when I interview someone. But ok, fine - you're the resume professional.

And then she proceeded to tell me about how to use the internet to look for jobs.

Good times.

I firmly believe you'll get to the other side of this just fine. If there's anything I can do to help between now and then, though, do let me know.

I was on unemployment for almost a year back in... 2005? It was single-handedly the most frustrating and debilitating time in my adult life. When I went to apply for the benefits in person, they treated me like I was the scum of the earth... and then, like the person above me, I had to take "classes" for continuation of the benefits. It was awful... all I wanted, was to find work. This godforsaken state treated me like I was the scum of the earth.

Having just filed for my last unemployment payment I feel your pain. It is a tough system to get any straight answers in. On the up side I was able to do it all via the internet so I didn't have to deal with snotty workers.
