On the subject of having no depth.

At the moment I'm trying to read Game of Thrones, mostly because I want to watch the series and I love being that dickhead who watches adaptations of things and goes "Huh, well, in the book, which I readThe sad thing I've realized lately, however, is that when it comes to fantasy/sci-fi, my attention span is actually worse than when I was younger. I feel this, the desire to be able to talk about popular culture combined with a total lack of interest in that very same culture.

Right? The sick thing is I'm not even using the time I'm not investing in any of these pop culture trends wisely. Mostly I'm just sitting on ebay throwing my money away like I'm allergic to it.

My advice: try going reality-TV-abstinent for a year and see what happens :)

Of course, that's easy for me to say - the last time I watched Reality TV was a third of an episode of the original season of Survivor. And only because someone made me.

To be honest, I don't even know if reality television is to blame, I'm grasping at straws here to hide from the possibility that I might have some kind of developmental issue.

I figured, I'm just being tongue-in-cheek.

More likely the internet (and smartphones, if you have one) are to blame. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/1834682.stm

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who reads a book just to be that dick who can act all superior when watching a film/TV show, haha.

And dear God, I'm completely with you. My attention span can hang on fine to watch three or four episodes of ANTM or Teen Mom in a row, but give me a remotely 'intelligent' book to read and I've fallen asleep 3 pages in. It's so bad. I kind of hate myself for it.

Whenever I finish a book that's critically respected nowadays, I basically throw a party for myself.
