Glee | The Confessions of Mike Chang | Mike (One Shot)

Started my daily ficlets to make the hiatus pass, then decided to keep going with a second cycle, and then a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh cycle. Now here's cycle 8!

"THE CONFESSIONS OF MIKE CHANG"
Mike, Mike/Brittany-esque
Part of Confessions series: Emma

He would watch them sometimes, wondering… It wasn’t as though they looked completely miserable all the time… Rachel, Tina, Mercedes, Artie, and Kurt… Despite everything people did or said, they… powered through. As good of a sentiment as that was, he had to wonder if that would have been enough for him.

They only knew him to be a jock with a penchant for dance, to have started with one before branching into the other. Fact was he’d come one decision short of being on the other end. He would have never been on the football team, he would have just been a dancer, sooner than he had.

He’d almost forgotten about it for a while, to be honest. He’d been just a kid, the first time he’d gotten to love dancing. It wasn’t anything to write home about, not at first. He was just a boy with rhythm and some hint of coordination… it was a lot of flailing around, to most people. But anyone who understood his passion could see he had potential.

As powerful of a thing as this passion could be, it was not one shared by his father. He had one of his own… football. He’d been on his high school team, one of its members not forgotten by the years. It wasn’t about legacy for Mr. Chang though. All he’d ever wanted was to share his love for the sport with his son.

They had their regular game day routine, the two of them. Right from the start of the day, they were anticipating kick off, putting on their shirts, going to the store to pick up snacks. Once the game was on, there was no way to get them away from it.

Mike would get up and do his ‘flail dance’ at every touchdown, be it for their team or the opposite one. When it was done, he would recap the game to his mother.

As it was, two possibilities came to him almost at the same time. The first came from a visit to their new neighbors’ house. She was a dance teacher and, after spying him dancing around like no one was looking, she had suggested to his mother that she register him for one of her classes.

His parents would both come and wish him good night before he went to sleep, first his father and then his mother. When his father came in, he had a suggestion. He asked Mike if he wanted to play football, not just watch. Mike said he wasn’t sure. They would throw the ball around from time to time, and he had fun. But he wanted to think about it. So his father let it go at that and said goodnight.

His mother came next. When she sat on the edge of his bed, tucking him in, she told him about what their neighbor had offered. Just like with his father’s pitch, Mike was left to wonder. He went to bed that night, with two paths balanced in his mind. Maybe he’d get an idea the next day.

The next day was game day… he’d almost forgotten about what his parents had passed by him. It was midway through the game, after another touchdown that it came back to him. He’d looked at his father though, and he thought about all the moments they’d shared from all this. If he played, then they’d just have more to share among the two of them. The more he thought about it throughout the game, the more distracted he got. Finally, his father had asked him if he was okay.

“I want to play football,” he had then said, looking up at him. And that was the end of the matter for him and dance for a while.

It still made him wonder, what would have happened if he’d decided to go with dance class. Would he still be friends with Matt, or Puck… Brittany… If it meant he got to be closer to her, he supposed he’d made the right choice, even though deep down he knew if he had to choose the one thing that he loved more, deep down, then football would not have won…

THE END
