The breast cancer bra meme going around facebook sparked an interesting discussion between briefsynopsis and I today...it diverged into something that has been on my mind a lot lately, and deserves some thought by anyone raising a daughter, and really, by any woman, if not by everyone.

got long - cut for length )

silence, raising kids, parenting

I don't know if you noticed this...but on that link, there's a picture and video of another girl who did the same thing earlier that year. She sent nudes to someone and they got sent around to a lot of people so she killed herself as well. I don't know how supportive/unsupportive her parents were when they found out...but that's still an issue. Teen girls thinking they need to send nudies to get attention.

And this is why I think Degrassi: The Next Generation is the best show ever made. It touches on so many subjects that may be difficult to bring up with our children. It gives you the platform to start the conversations that are otherwise difficult to bring up.

Yeah, I know - it's not a new thing, girls killing themselves from shame after doing what they thought they needed to do to get attention.

I'll look into that, I haven't heard of it.

It's a Canadian show. It used to be on The-N (the teenager version of Noggin), not sure if they still show it or not though because I haven't had cable in forever.

I've seriously had this post open to respond to for the last..well..since you posted it. And I can't think of anything overtly useful to respond with other than, "It scares the shit out of me too."

Its just so..good lord. I don't even know how to articulate it.

I know :( It's absolutely terrifies me, too. These are just little girls. How could this happen? How did the adults in her life let this happen? Will I bet that blind when Lily is older?
