Just what I needed…

Seems an author and my publisher is in a contract dispute and the public outcry about the situation has one blogger urging her readers to boycott my publisher’s books. Do they not think it’s hard enough for an author writing multicultural paranormal lesfic to even break even, now I got to worry about the threat of a boycott that is really punishing ( Read more... )

I've been headdesking about this too. Everyone has bad experiences with publishers. But you DON'T explode about it in public. I've been trying to stay on the fence about this but the public vitriol makes my teeth itch. Both sides have--one way or the other--behaved badly, and I regret hugely that a publisher who hasn't (as far as I'm aware) had any strikes so far, and has always been professional and paid bang on the nose, has now got bad reps on P&E and Erec Blog. *shakes head sadly*

I can see both sides of this one. It sucks to be an author signed with a publisher whose failings are being publicly discussed. On the other hand, authors can't adequately research prospective publishers unless other authors with those publishers talk about their experiences, good and bad.

If a good publisher is being unfairly slagged by a single author, I doubt it'll have much effect in the long run. However, if the author's account of extortion, failure of payment, unprofessional behaviour, etc is correct, then I would imagine other authors who have experienced similar problems will come forward, and the publisher's other authors will start nervously checking their contracts to see if it could happen to them, too.

Based on my very limited experience with this publisher, I'd not recommend them, but YMMV.
