Lots of people absolutely love that book . . . I personally liked it and enjoyed it, but I never seemed to understand why people loved it so much.
Some of my suggestions are Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner, though I've heard the other book he has published's great, too. I really enjoyed Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds and, oh, oh, if you're looking for some sweet fantasy you've got Nicholson's trilogy the Wind Singer (he's the one that wrote the screenplay for Gladiator).
It's just the characters, the way Henry and CLaire interact with each other, the general tone and style it's written in, that's kind of dreamy, occasionally abstract, and... I don't know, it's what I always pick up on the nights when I'm kind of broody and nostalgic and longing for Dubai and can't sleep, and it suits my mood perfectly.
Hosseini's meant to be good, but I've never been inspired to pick up one of his books.
Okay, for sure adding The Kite Runner to the list because I've had other people rec that to me. I've never heard of The Thorn Birds, but I'm willing to take a look. *grins* And oh! I loved Gladiator, so, *adds The Wind Singer trilogy.
Ohhh, I almost picked up Stardust the other day, but I just wasn't sure. I'll have to go back and get it. I don't know why I doubted it in the first place. *laughs*
Clive Barker's Weaveworld has peaked my interest before, but I haven't heard anyone talk about it (that I know), so I'll look into that one, too.
Never heard of Valiant, I don't think, but if Courtney rec's it, then I'm all for it.
Soooomeday... I'm going to pick up a book by YOU. =)
You'll probably laugh at my very basic recs: Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, the Chronicles of Narnia (all 7 of them), Three Wishes (by Liane Moriarty - Aussie writer, so if you read, there may be some things you don't understand. Happy to decipher, though. :) Actually, anything by her is good and original).
Probably more helpful if I gave the books I want to read one day: -
Girl with a Pearl Earring Dear Fatty by Dawn French The Virgin Suicides Wuthering Heights The Secret Garden (I read it ages ago but can't remember it) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Anything by Terry Prachett Moby Dick Homer Angels and Demons 80% of the Angus and Robertson Top 100 because I just can't think of them all!
Are you kidding me? WHY WOULD I LAUGH AT YOUR AMAZING LIST? Seriously. First, it's YOU. Second, the books you've rec'ed that I've either read (and loved) or have seriously thought about reading or ARE on my list to read eventually, are therefor amazing. And thirdly...I don't have a third reason, but the list just didn't seem complete without a third reason. *laughs*
I've never read a book by an Aussie before! I'm going to have to do this. And, of course, come to you with my questions. *grins*
Seriously, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? I know that books are usually better than the movies, but the movie just hasn't interested me for some reason. Not even with the fact that it has Brad Pitt in it. *shrugs* The whole backwards thing just ... I think it freaks me out. When you read it, let me know what you think about it.
