Study Date

Gina looked curiously at the young woman standing in the doorway of the empty gym, noting the faint apprehension in her stance. She also looked vaguely familiar, although the FBI agent couldn’t quite remember why. “Can I help you?” she asked kindly, giving her a welcoming smile.

“I hope so. I was told to give this to an Agent Cooper.” the young woman replied, holding up a large envelope and returning the smile. Of course, the one day Coop wasn’t in, a package arrived.

“I see. He’s not here right now.” Giving the stranger another curious look, Gina saw that she certainly didn’t look like a courier, and so asked the obvious question: “May I ask who sent you?”

“Agent Rossi did. Why he didn’t just hire someone, I’ll never know…I’m Ashley Seaver, by the way. And…I know this will sound weird, but I think we’ve met before.”

Seaver. The name clicked in her mind, and Gina remembered why she looked so familiar. Giving her a relaxed smile and shaking the offered hand, she said, “Pleased to meet you, Ashley. I’m Agent Gina LaSalle. And we have met before - we were in a class together at the Academy. We were in separate years, so I suppose we never had a reason to talk to each other.”

When Gina had first noticed Ashley, she couldn’t recall. What had caught her attention was the fact that she always seemed to be the first one in class. Normally, she wouldn’t have thought much of it, but this girl seemed to be several years younger than her classmates, and yet always managed to be the first one there despite a busy schedule. Another thing that had caught her eyes was the girl’s looks. She was very pretty, and while she didn’t seem to show it off, there were hints that she was aware of the glances she was getting from the other students.

Ashley’s eyes lit up at that, and she nodded enthusiastically. “That’s right, in Agent Monroe’s class! Wow, that was back in my first year…”

Smiling at the memories of their instructor, Gina tipped her head to the side and asked, “Sorry if this is a bit rude, but I thought Agent Hotcher was getting a full agent for his team?”

“It’s alright. He will be, once I graduate.” Ashley replied, following along as the older woman led them upstairs and into her office. “The rest of the team may call me an agent while we’re on a case, but I’m not one yet.”

Recalling her own graduation, Gina smiled and settled into a chair. “That’s coming up soon for you then. It’ll be an exciting day, but try and keep cool and take everything in.” Nodding towards the envelope Ashley still held, she asked, “Any idea what’s in that?”

“Not a clue. Hopefully nothing important, seeing as how Agent Cooper isn’t here. Where’s the rest of your team?”

“Either off for the day or not in yet.” Prophet and Mick were attending the Braves vs. Nationals game Prophet had spent the last week talking about, Coop was at an all-day conference, and Beth wasn’t scheduled to arrive for another hour. “Hopefully a case won’t pop up and drag everyone in.”

“They do have a habit of doing that.” the younger girl agreed lightly, handing the envelope to Gina before settling back in her seat. The woman noticed that the soon-to-be agent was looking her over closely, and wondered briefly if they were contemplating the same thing. But they were both still at work, so there was no point in raising the topic.

“Listen…it’s been a few years since I took the exams, but if you need a hand studying, I’ll be happy to help.” The offer sounded horribly awkward to her ears, and she wondered if Ashley even needed her help. To be an agent as such a young age required brains, and she obviously had them.

There was a moment of surprised silence, then Ashley nodded and smiled. “That would be great, actually. I’ve been trying to keep up, but a few recent cases have taken up most of my time…are you free tonight?”

“I am.”

“Great! Here’s my number.” Accepting the offered pad and pen, she quickly scribbled down the cell number and handed it back to the agent. “I’ll call you later, ok?”

“Sure.” Rising, Gina walked her down to the door of the gym, leaning against it as Ashley stepped outside. “I’ll see you tonight, Ashley.”

“Bye, Gina.” Flashing her a parting smile, the younger woman turned and left the building. Watching her go, Gina felt a mixture of pleasure and apprehension. She was almost positive she wasn’t misreading the signals Ashley was sending, but a small part of her whispered that she could be wrong.

Gina pulled Ashley closer to her, grateful for the darkened car. They had met at a small coffee shop near the Academy and spent several hours going over notes and possible exam questions. Much of the information was similar to what she had been taught, although she was surprised to discover how much of it had vanished from her mind in the years since she had graduated.

She had risked touching Ashley a few times; just a simple hand on the knee or a reassuring shoulder squeeze, nothing more. The younger woman seemed to enjoy the attention, relaxing and smiling more freely than she had that morning. She had eagerly accepted the offer of a ride home, and they were currently parked down the street from her apartment.

Gina hadn’t planned on kissing her, it just seemed the natural thing to do when Ashley leaned just a little too close to for it be accidental while taking off her seatbelt. Thankfully, her intuition had been correct, and the kiss hadn’t backfired on her.

Pulling away to catch a breath of air, the woman smiled as she felt a hand slide around her shoulders, Ashley’s breath warm on her face.

“Gina?”

“Yeah?”

“I wish we had talked at the Academy.”

“Me too.”

Closing her eyes as they kissed again, she wondered if this was a one-time thing or not. She certainly hoped not, since exams were still several months away.
