About two or three weeks back the cover story on the one Columbus alternative weekly (cleverly named The Other Paper) did a cover story on the Senate committee that dealt with this bill. Apparently at least five committee members (3 GOP and 2 Dems) who grilled the member of CCV who testified and called the bill a ludicrous waste of time then turned around and recommended it from committee. I only remember that one of the five was Capri Cafaro, and forget who the rest were
( ... )
But he explained his vote to recommend the bill by saying that if he blocked the bill that it wouldn't be good for his career to have made an enemy of CCV.
And that's common about almost any kind of intersection of free speech (or just common sense) and sexuality -- it's too "politically dangerous" to make the appropriate, correct, and constitutional decisions.
Lately, with regards to this issue, I've been saying that the state legislators need to be sat down with a copy of "Profiles in Courage". Sometimes the right thing is going to get you tossed from your position, but it's the right thing, and it needs to be done to protect our freedoms and our democracy from tyranny of the majority.
