I am applying for jobs. Part of what I do is project management. Should I be PMI certified, or does nobody care?

In other news, the Hahvahd job I was working toward for months and months got to a point where everyone involved was really excited about me and they called to ask for my references one morning and then THAT DAY there was a big layoff ( Read more... )

sympathy on the job stuff! :(

PMI cert: it depends a little which one you are looking at. The PMP cert (I have it) is well known, gets you lots of attention from recruiters, and is sometimes a requirement or a major plus. (Ping me offline for more on that.)

There's a more senior level one that I am eyeing but am underqualified for, but it's also new. There's a lower level one that I don't think is worth the bother. Both of those I have never seen on a ojb posting - I see "PMP Cert a plus" a LOT.

I was thinking of you, as the only person I know of who definitely has the PMP cert. I think I'll see if my job will help me get it...

I'd get the PMP. It's yet another certification that helps you get in through the door.

That said, be sure to not base your resume around it, as there are lots of places that don't particularly like using the PMBOK.

If you were working in the UK, go for PRINCE2 certification :-)

(I've got all my training for the PMP, just have been too lazy to write up my application.)

As a note, read the requirements closely before you certify. They have varying requirements including X years in the field and Y projects documented. I didn't pursue any accreditation for a while because none of my projects were big enough to command the sort of overhead that the training wanted to see. (It may be time to re-evaluate this.) The classes I took were awesome though. Worth it all on their own.
