[Leonora is hauled up in one of the numerous study rooms in Mysidia, surrounded by a pile of books and parchments. It's unlike her to get huffy but she is a tad frustrated by her research for the day. There's nothing but one minor and oblique reference to the spell that interests her in the Mysidian records, the Gaian tomes available speak of the ( Read more... )

[There is a very enthusiastic ...thing on the screen. It might be a monster that's learned to use the skyphones. It's certainly in the right place, the planes of the Veldt stretching out behind it. It's caked in dried mud, which has been used to stick molted monster fur to it, and it's surronded by a pack of doglike monsters. In the background, the younger of them charge each other, playfighting.

And whatever it is, it really does seem incensed about something.]

Ul-teema!

[Leonora stares for a fair bit at the monster romping on the screen, but at what sounds like mention of the spell, she drums up the courage to say something.]

Y-yes? You know of it?

[Gdit, Palom. You're supposed to be the teacher here. But if you're letting your student study Ultima, she's going to have to go over your head.]

On our world, Ultima is the strongest white magic spell in recorded history. Records claim it was sealed away centuries ago, around the time of the end of the age of magic. Several texts have suggested that it was deemed too strong, sealed away from those of the blue planet completely, and that only the people of the moon could use it. On this world, it was responsible for a great disaster that befell the Genomes of the mage village on the Outer Continent several years ago.

...has my brother told you to study it?

[Leonora listens patiently, eyes going wider and wider the longer Porom speaks.]

Um, w-well not exactly. I wanted to try to work on something by myself... to surprise him.

[This is sounding more and more like a bad idea.]

The Great Sage, in his time on Gaia, said that it was not to be used.

[She sighs, and what follows is said in a very rare authoritative tone.]

I'm saying this as the leader of Mysidia, Leonora, not as your friend. I forbid you from continuing your study of that spell.

Ah...?

[Leonora just stares at the phone in surprise. She's such a mousey little follower anyway that being told not to would have deterred her. The forcefulness of the tone takes her by surprise and she shrinks back while nodding meekly in acquiescence.]

[Lulu regards Leonora carefully. She doesn't look too old enough to know what Ultima is, but she speaks of it.]

It's a very powerful Black Magic spell in my world. I don't believe there's any tomes for you to study, considering the nature of it.

[They're almost the same age! ...just because Leonora's a mouse and not nearly as self-assured (or busty)...]

So it's Black Magic? [But didn't Porom say White? So confusing!] It is possible to learn then?

[Lulu nods.]

Very powerful Black Magic. Not many mages are able to master it. I would suggest, however, not to study it unless you are absolutely sure you wish to learn it. It took me ages to fully master it.

Maybe I should wait.

[She's getting some adamant NO from the twins, plus the bombardment from the others on the network.]

Could I take notes from you at least? There's not much here about it at all.

Well, I'm a student and I saw a reference to it but I've not really heard much of it before. I was hoping it'd be something I could learn.

[She's trying to impress a guy, alright?]

I thought it might please my teacher if I worked on something new. Um do you know it?

Oh! Oh... no, that won't do at all.

[Poor little mouse is now scared and half-hiding behind her book. He's not even as harsh as Palom and she's still quaking in her robes.]

I'm sorry! I didn't know and I couldn't find much of anything no matter where I looked.

Oh hello!

[So her surprise is ruined, but aren't you proud of her for taking some initiative?]

I don't want you doing this. Ultima... it's not to study.

Oh.

[Well darn it. This is twice now she thought she found something to impress Palom with that he's said no to.]
