It would depend on your relationship with him. If you are a casual friend or a charge, a simple message would likely suffice.

If you are a close friend, however, I would recommend setting aside some time to send with him, also a small gift. It will need to be practical, though, he very much enjoys gifts that are useful. [He restrains the impulse to recommend potholders, but just barely.] Perhaps an accessory that protects against status effects, or a trinket thathold sentimental value. Nothing too flashy or gaudy, mind, he much prefers adornment that is simplistic and spartan.
