OBLIG. POLITICS POST

Yesterday, as I played Bangai-O Spirits on the bus going home, I overheard a conversation between two loud, obnoxious women -- the kind of person you could tell you wouldn't like even if they weren't dead wrong. (In fact, it might have just been one extremely loud, obnoxious woman talking on the phone, but I heard two ends of a conversation. That ( Read more... )

Wasn't it originally established that the loser in an election would be the VP? Like back in the day?

Yes, but that's not what they were suggesting. If they had their way, Palin would be the next VP. The tactic is obvious: get the worst VP you can think of, so that people are afraid to vote for the other guy for fear that your VP will end up in office.

This might have worked in McCain's favor.

Like I've said, I don't like any candidate who's okay with taxing the people, but I like that Obama is going to make rich folks pay most of my share. That's the one thing I'm honestly kind of enthused about, other than that, I'm just very happy that the Bush presidency is almost over. The system is still messed up, it's still big government and it probably always will be.

How rich is "rich"? In Seattle, if you're a homeowner, then you're probably a millionaire. It doesn't mean that you're doing well, it just means you have a house. Back in Texas, the same amount of money would get you a mansion.

The other problem with taxing the rich is that they are the economy. When the stock market crashed, how much did you lose? Anything? But the big guys did, and since the rich will stay rich, they had to lay off workers to preserve their lifestyles. You can't take their money and hope that it won't affect everyone else.

Rich people are the economy? Fair enough. Tax the poor.

There's such thing as a flat tax. If you want to make it easier on the poor, then tax X% - $Y, so that if you earn below $Y, you don't pay anything. Graduated income tax punishes you for doing well.
