He always gets so much applause during the debates... you'd think that would be a sign that he was considered a major candidate, but you rarely hear about him in magazines and on television, which is a shame.
That's because the war is one of the two issues that defines a republican as different from a democrat, and those are the republican debates. (Oh, oops, I think I spilled some of my politics in your live journal.)
Also, I think the main reason he won't win is that people our age, and people in general who are disillusioned with government, don't vote. He will have gobs of supporters who all forget that they have to be registered until it's too late, and then they'll be like "meh". But I'm voting for him anyway. I threw away my vote on the green party four years ago and I'm totally ready to do it again. :D
And the other is... abortion? Republican sentiment on abortion is much more varied than on war.
The funny thing is, Paul's right about traditional conservatism. He's rightly the only conservative on that stage. The Republican party isn't what it used to be.
Paul has said that he won't run independent if he loses the Republican ticket, so it's only a throwaway vote on the primaries, if such a thing exists.
