Gad indeed. I've encountered this with the later translations of Haruki Murakami's novels: his first four or five have one translator, and have a much more wry and amused tone. Translations by the woman doing his into-English during middle phase of his career have been pretty flat, and someone has finally figured out the humorous voice again, in the last couple works he's published in English. It's curious as all get-out.
