My, this is interesting: The Tories are using stomping-out-in-a-huff tactics to disrupt the work of both the
International Trade and
Official Languages committees.
In the first case, committee chair Leon Benoit ordered a witness to stop who was testifying that energy integration with the US would cause Canada to "freeze in the dark," during a debate on deep integration. The NDP's Peter Julian challenged the chair, in order to allow the witness to continue, and the committee voted with him. Whereupon Benoit declared the meeting adjourned and stomped off in a huff.
In the second case, the NDP's Yvon Godin has moved to remove committee chair Guy Lauzon over the Tories' infamous cuts to the Court Challenges Program (which in addition to shellacking LGBT and women's rights initiatives also threaten official languages programs, and were described for that reason by Official Language Commissioner Graham Fraser as illegal in a report he's due to present to the House tomorrow morning). All Tory MPs have been ordered not to take the job if Lauzon is kicked out, which would mean the committee would cease to function, as the chair must be from the governing party.
They're like children.
