it doesn't matter what you call it - which is why it's not a religious term like God or Allah - you just need something else to draw strength from. In the end, whatever you find healing in is personal.
Also, shop around for different meetings at different times until you find one you feel really comfortable in.
Yeah, I have to agree with this. My dad is... either atheist or a strong agnostic, we don't talk about personal beliefs much... and he's been in AA for many years. The level of focus on HP stuff really varies in between meetings. Just try to find one you feel comfortable with!
I think that just believing in myself is fine, so I'll go with that. I've always believed in myself anyway, even as a little kid in a shit household. It's just that recently, after years of post-secondary school and years of slowly cutting ties with the relatives, stuff has started to come up. I need to deal with shit.
I guess I'll have to try out some of the various ACoA groups.
As for the COH group, there appears to be only one, so I guess I'll just give it a try. It's not weekly and the next meeting is just under two weeks from now.
you can consider higher power whatever you want, but you have to keep in mind some might consider it judeo-xian god and you'll need to deal. My own dad, with 20 yrs of AA sobriety under him, says when you need it you won't care anymore, but that's his story.
btw not believing in a higher power of some sort (as previously mentioned, nature, allah, a friend of mine called it the weather!) is a sign of classic addiction/family of addict behaviour, a refusal to give up control/the idea you could control.
I'm sorry that no one has yet addressed your actual questions of whether or not there are other groups out there. I only wish I could do more than google a bit to try & help.
Of course, w/ my google powers, I found the CoH group that I believe you're referring to & googled the phone number supplied. Unless I'm entirely mistaken, it's the organizer, Ms Gail Adams' residential number. It won't result in quick answers, but if she really isn't replying to your messages, you might try sending her a letter by snail mail at 1550, av Filion, Saint-Lambert, QC - J4R1W5... You could also try contacting Ami-Quebec about the group.
As for whether you'd feel comfortable at either of the groups, I'd say go, try 'em out. If they don't work for you, you should be able to get information about whether other similar groups are around that might be a better fit.
As for a "higher power," my concern was that there would be some kind of religious pressure and/or agenda. I am not familiar with 12-Step-style groups. I believe in myself, corny as that seems in text, so that's good for me. As for other people's religious or higher power or whatever beliefs, that's all good with me.
Other people's beliefs are their business and not really my concern or any of my business.
It is possible that MY Google powers failed and I got the number wrong. Especially if it appears to YOU to be that woman's personal number. I will look again on the link. Thanks.

I seriously don't think that AA is advising members to rely on the prime minister to help get them through their next rough patch.
