Participants needed for study - could I steal 10 minutes of your time?

Hey Montrealers!

I'm a student at McGill, majoring in Psychology, minoring in Linguistics. For this term I’m doing a project on... well, I wish I could tell you but that would ruin the purpose of my study. But I'll tell you later in case you're interested.

Honestly, Batman is not in any critical danger. Kryptonite can kill Superman. Unlock the damn cage, he'll regain his powers, and can get Batman medical attention.

Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly... while writing up the stories, I was hoping that semantics won't interfere too much. ;)

Thanks!

I'm just busting you, I'll fill it out, but I'm on to your games. (shifty eyes)

Maybe come back after a week and tell us if you got the results you were looking for?

Yep, I will :) And no worries, I figured as much.
Just saying that there's a huge Justice League fan here who had a hard time deciding between her desire to put in Batman references and making it easy enough for people to understand.

And that "Thanks" was not sarcastic or anything - I really mean it.

And yep, I will come back - data collection runs for 1.5 weeks from now, so I'll let you know later what I was looking for.

"the only exclusion criterion would be if you have knowledge about linguistics that goes beyond an introductory level"

damnit!

Also, this project is SO MUCH COOLER than what I had to do in that class!

Awwwww - yeah, I imagine.

Luckily, we got a lot of freedom in how to design our projects. When I presented mine (with the stories and all), my prof rolled her eyes and mumbled something like "I should know better than letting undergrads make up their own questionnaires." ;)

Btw, are you a (former?) McGillian, too? Or Concordia? Or one of the Francophones?

McGill Alumni :)

Double-majored in Linguistics and English lit. and then got my B.ed. in TESL.

When I took the class, half the term was dedicated to group student presentations. While the subjects involved were usually interesting, it was not very motivating!

I did a year of linguistics classes (it was my major when I first started uni, so that was like 2002-3) and I failed almost all my classes except Ling 200 (the intro class that was full year; now I think it's intro and chomsky?) Does that disqualify me.

I don't want to sound mean but then you might be okay. ;)

They don't even teach the stuff here in 201 (and in 200 only this one prof does it) but only in higher level classes.

I just wanted to make sure that there are no Ling nerds who know about the study I'm trying to replicate... but it usually doesn't show up until the middle-300s.

Thanks! :)

Done... and as below, questionning my reading comprehension.

Awww, no worries - for most of these, there is no real wrong answer... just a "well, you could also mean XYZ instead..."
And even if you did not have that feeling, that's interesting, too! ;)

So thanks! :)

Done.
(Now I'm questioning my reading comprehension in English. Damn it.)

Yeah, I'm right there with you. And I just spent a year and a half working as an editor! *grin*

Haha, yeah... that was on purpose... kinda. ;)
But I'm sure you did fine... for most of these (the confusing ones anyway), there's no right or wrong, so I'm pretty sure you did just fine.

Thanks a lot for your help!

No worries... these were hard questions... or at least confusing ones, most of them. Normal people don't talk this way, so who cares? ;)

Thanks a lot for the help! :D
