He wasn't thrilled about shipping his bike across the country, but he knew there was no way he could ride that far. And no way he could get James to ride that far with him, in any case. And the bike was really the only thing they were sending to Montana. Everything else they'd buy when they got there. Greg had his cane, his iPod, his tooth brush, ( Read more... )

James had been to Montana before, so he knew what to expect with regards to scenery. He'd never really noticed it before, however, not until they'd both touched down at Missoula International Airport. Definitely not until they'd both done the long trek out to the lodge Greg had booked for them. So far, James wasn't complaining. So far. Because as much as Montana was Greg's idea, moving away was James'. So they'd both won in this instance -- Greg got to go to Montana, and James got his own way by moving away.

James hadn't brought along too much, either. Just his clothes, his toiletries, his hairdryer and a few other things. Everything else was back in New York. He'd more or less done the same thing he'd done when he left Princeton, and that was leave behind everything that reminded him of his mistakes.

"How much, exactly, is this setting us back?" James asked as they both approached the entrance doors, James lugging all of Greg's things as well as his own.

"I don't remember." He did remember. And the figure was a bit bigger than he wanted to admit. He didn't care, really. He didn't have three ex-wives to support.

"Don't worry about it. I'm footing the bill." For now, at least.

He only had the one bag, that James was carrying. He could ahve carried it himself, though it was awkward for him. He could ahve managed. But it was so much the better for him to make James carry it.

That bit was the surprising bit -- the fact that Greg was paying. That clearly showed just how much Greg actually wanted to get away from New York, else he'd have been making James foot the bill, James was certain.

"You don't remember?" James echoed, stopping by the door. He juggled the bags in his hands with a mild scowl on his face before he lifted a hand to the door and pulled it open for Greg.

Did James mind carrying all the bags and opening the door for Greg? No. Because as much as things weren't really laid to rest between them, James was willing to pretend. If he pretended, then maybe everything would be laid to rest between them without ever having to deal with it.

As long as there was something for him to gain, Greg was perfectly fine, for the moment, to pretend nothing was wrong. They had come all this way, essentially to the middoe of nowhere, to start over and to start fresh.

Whatever happened in Princeton, whatever happened in New York, he'd put it all behind him. He wanted to make things work with James, and he wanted to make sure it was all on his terms. Not James' terms.

"It's a substantial amount, if you must know. But we cut a deal, because I only wanted the one bedroom."
