What is this movie ABOUT? Why is Christina Ricci so skinny and dried-up-looking?

It's about a bluesman (Jackson) who finds a nymphomaniac left for dead (Ricci), and then chains her up to his radiator in order to educate her about the ways of the Lord. Affections and understanding ensue.
