Superman Returns comes out June 27th at 10:00 PM at the IMAX 3D theatre in Tulsa (I know, how are they getting around that 28th release date of midnight?). Tickets are now selling for $10.00 + 0.75 online processing fee. The film runs 2 1/2 hrs., so it'd let out at 12:45 (because of 15 min. of previews), which would put me home by 2:00 AM ( Read more... )

Why don't they release these things on the frickin' weekend?

My guess answer to my own question:

Movies that are sure to have big opening night sales are better placed in the middle of the week to deter some viewers who will wait until the weekend to see the film. This way, their is less chance of the movie selling out(requring viewers to be turned away) and the rush of viewers can be more evenly distributed over a number of days, enabling the theatre to handle the rush better.

Yep. That's the reason exactly, particularly for summer releases because so many people are on vacation/kids out of school. The first movie to do this was The Lost World, Labor Day of 1997.
