Don't back off for a teensy bit. This is batshit crazy and you need to run screaming. Whether this is typical behavior or not there are obviously some long simmering issues that have never been addressed. You hanging around waiting for this to get resolved only means that it won't. It is a big sea with plenty of fish throw your line elsewhere.

It turns out that this was alcohol-fueled. Not that it makes the situation any better, but at least it's easier to understand. Too bad; this could have been nice. Sigh...

I don't know why people think alcohol makes this sort of thing understandable. Unless someone is 21, alcohol is just an excuse for being an asshole. And no, from the looks of things it wouldn't have been nice. Be glad you dodged that bullet.
