I can't figure out where to begin to talk about why I've been so MIA, so I'm not going to try, but just know that it's a result of too much happening to me right now -- nothing bad, really, and no fandom ennui, just too much taking up my time and energy. I miss y'all, though

I don't know the answer to your question, except that I think these boys have been in each other's pockets, risking their lives day in, day out, and at some point, their world has narrowed to where it makes complete sense to me that Dean would be all Sam, all the time.
When Sam left for college, Dean was 22? With a hunter dad riding him? Things are pretty different now.
I've also always imagined that Dean kept track of Sam, even if he never made contact.
For that matter, the whole "You leave now, you just stay gone" attitude that we heard about from the dad doesn't really make much sense, either. I can hand-wave it.

I do think we have a lot of leeway in figuring out how Dean dealt during the Stanford era, you're right. Maybe that's all it takes -- to assume that Dean was really downplaying EVERYTHING in the pilot.
I love the idea that Dean is all about Sam now, I do! So I WANT to believe it. Stupid Jensen's stupid comment put a whole monkeywrench into that, though -- it didn't seem RIGHT to me, or at least not any more. Perhaps the lesson here is that I should never listen to actors discuss their roles, but I'd just always thought that the Ackles had such a good beat on Dean before, you know?

but i'm quite sure he couldn't have, even obliviously, gone to the con and said "Dean's all about Sam." i think even he and everyone not ON THIS BOOTY TRAIN OF AWESOME would have been like, "uh. dude. that was sort of...gay."
did that make any sense?

But I had the same "Stanford WTF?" moment during last night's ep too. I think that ultimately boils down to Dean knowing Sam wants this so badly and maybe even convincing himself that he and John will be a more effective hunting unit than him and John and an unwilling and unhappy Sam.
Thinky!
