my day planner has a list of countries and what their holidays are. Japan has maybe 2 less than the US does (no one else comes close) but I think maybe they celebrate all of them or something, unlike us.

every last one of them. The one we had before this one was for parents to take their 3,5, and 7 year olds to have pictures taken in kimonos and suits/dresses.

Ya....this country has an absolute ton of Holidays it seems. This wednesday I'm once again out of school for something...I've even just stopped asking what the holidays mean anymore. ^_^

i wonder if the presence of so many holidies is due to the fact that there's no summer vacation

The explanation I got when I asked my host family was that it is very hard to take leave in Japan. So, the governemt makes holidays out of almost anything and unlike in the US, almost all of them are observed.
And there is summer vacation...as far as I know o.O
