The first event on my birthday really caught my eye:

41 - Gaius Caesar (Caligula), known for his eccentricity and cruel despotism, is assassinated by his disgruntled Praetorian Guards.

And 1,962 years later:

2003 - The United States Department of Homeland Security officially begins operation.

There is either irony or weird symmetry in this. Perhaps both.

OK, I'll bite.

1872 - The first-ever international football match takes place at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow, between Scotland and England.
1886 - The Folies Bergère stages its first revue.
1974 - Lucy (Australopithecus) is discovered by Donald Johanson, Maurice Taieb, Yves Coppens and Tim White in the Middle Awash of Ethiopia's Afar Depression.

1554 - Philip Sidney, English courtier, soldier, and writer (d. 1586)
1835 - Mark Twain, American writer (d. 1910)

The obvious choice of holiday would be St. Andrew's Day, but for various reasons I think I prefer "Official end of the Hurricane season."

539 BC - King Cyrus The Great of Persia marches into the city of Babylon, releasing the Jews from almost 70 years of exile and making the first Human Rights Declaration.
1888 - Thomas Edison files a patent for the Optical Phonograph (the first movie).
1989 - Loma Prieta earthquake (7.1 on the Richter scale) hits the San Francisco Bay Area and causes 57 deaths directly (and 6 indirectly).

1886 - Spring Byington, American actress (d. 1971) (Loved her in In The Good Old Summertime!)
1915 - Arthur Miller, American playwright (d. 2005)

National Edge Day (I had no idea, so I clicked the link. Apparently, it is in support of the movement within the hardcore punk community to abstain from alcohol, drugs, and casual sex. Supporters are encouraged to walk the "straight edge". Who knew?)

Cool meme! Thanks!
