I'm torn. Like you, I've enjoyed Adam's character and the actor's performance has been awesome, but I definitely agree that the story was paced wrong.
I would have been okay with Adam become Erica's love interest over the course of the season, but it was clear from the get-go that that's where the writers were going and it felt very ham-fisted. Adam being the only member of the group to become an actual character was... awkward. But if they really did want it to be about Erica and Adam, I would have preferred that the front end of the season focus on Erica's career/family stuff with Adam's background/family stuff also developing simultaneously, and then anything blatantly Erica+Adam-focused sticking strictly to the backend. Although I suspect that with a 12-episode season, most arcs of any significance would feel a bit compressed.
Which goes to my next point.
I wonder if a not-insignificant part of the problem is that the writers are always writing against the fear that they may not have another season to tell the story(ies)

Yeah, a lot of their choices DO have a distinct flavor of "Oh, shit, we might get canceled." And what disappoints me is that they couldn't think of a better season three arc to contend with that. It's like when ATWT had nearly a year to process its ending and then blew it.
Oh, the CBC...lostvoiceDecember 8 2010, 14:07:04 UTC
I've been thinking about this all season - the looming spectre of cancellation - they tend to axe a lot of their dramas after S3,(This is Wonderland, The Border to name a couple) so it's really not outside the realm of possibility.
