I went back and forth a few times on the outcome of this particular story arc. I don't really like the way Leandra was so carelessly fridged in game but like you said, it's good drama. Orsino got short-changed too, but he's a bit easier to give more lines to.

The whole memories thing never made much sense, and it was somehow not really mentioned again, either. I mean, if it was true, then wouldn't it continue being a problem? Honestly, if you read the Hadriana thing happening the same day as Fenris and Hawke hooking up, that's more than enough good reason for him to want to back off for a while (but not three years, geeze).
