Let’s Replace the Best Fanzine Category with Best Blog

I know I’m coming late to the party, but while reading this post by Mike Glyer from File 770 I discovered that blogs, such as this one, aren’t actually eligible for a Hugo because, to quote Andrew Trembley, “under the current [Hugo] rule, a blog that doesn’t adopt a periodical format isn’t eligible…”

Trembley then follows this up by saying:

Not sure why you're so insulted. You yourself admit that you don't really craft the essays on the blog or try to make it come out on a regular basis, snd the text that you yourself quote says that if a blog meets that standard, it would be eligible. Unperiodic random musings do not a fanzine make.

Insulted? No. Shit stirring? Maybe. The thing is I don't have an expectation that my blog should be nominated. It just a bit of fun that I update every so often.

But there are blogs, like the ones I've linked to, that are of a higher quality than mine and if the individual entries were printed out and stuck together with a staple, would be nominated for Best Fanzine. (Well... maybe not... but I'd like to think they would).

And here's the thing - what makes something periodical? Why can't I state at the top of my blog that each month - whether I write 5 entries or 50 - is a discrete "issue" of the blog? Would that count? And if not, why not?

The fanzine is an institution and it’s going to take the release of some sort of super virus aimed at killing anyone whose been within 50 meters of a mimeograph before change occurs.

Old age?

Well, that's what it's going to end up being. Which is a shame.

We've done it for the Ditmars. Fanzine has merged with Fan Production to become Fan Publication, where fanzines can compete with blogs.
