Christmases past

Growing up, our Christmas trees were always lit with strings of those 1940s pine cone shaped colored lamps. And as our sets were wired in series, when one bulb didn’t work they all went out. I have fond memories of sitting by the tree and testing strings before decorating; those that didn’t work required tapping each bulb to see if it was loose and ( Read more... )

This set may be even older than those we had on the tree, according to what I could extrapolate from this site http://oldchristmastreelights.com/table_of_contents.htm

*grins* and I had to tap and tighten the first lamp to get this to work!

We had similar light sets for our Christmas trees when I was a kid. Tom still has a few strings of those lights in the upstairs hall closet. Those things can jack up anyone's electric bill! When mini-light sets came out, it helped, though the early ones too had the one bad bulb, the whole string goes out. I remember testing those bulbs with a small square shaped tester that used one nine volt battery. Now everything is LED, my tree is artificial and pre-lit. I still fondly remember those Christmases from long, long ago. I guess that's why I enjoy watching "A Christmas Story" every year, which I did the other night, along with "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "Polar Express". I also watch "A Christmas Carol" and "It's a Wonderful Life" every year too.

So many memories at the holidays! I have some movies I rotate through, but haven’t watched this year. For a change I did watch “Red,” and that Danny DeVito “Deck the Halls,” as well as “Christmas with the Cranks.” Not sure what it will be tonight :o)
