That's a nice-looking library.

They say we’re obsolete in a digital world. Many people don’t know we have movies, audio books, Kindles, telescopes, and museum passes, as well as printed books. Some branches loan cake pans, others have fishing tackle, and one loans both WiFi hotspot hardware as well as Rokus. And we can get any available item for you from any college or library nationwide. We also have digital access to magazines and newspapers (some back to 1854) as well as ebooks and online movies. Etc...

Cake pans and fishing tackle? Who'da thunk! I'll have to ask my local library if they have cake pans next time I'm there. :D

I think people are generally confused about two things when it comes to libraries: a) that they only have books (which is manifestly untrue, as you point out), and that b) they do nothing but keep those books (or generally items) they have. But of course it's not just enough to have stacks of books, you gotta organize them and make them accessible. The same goes for any media, digital or not ( ... )

One of the branches also used to loan framed paintings for your home, so you could change your decor :D

I've gotten some wonderful items via ILL- the UPA history book was my recent favorite.

Oh, we have one of those! It's a "pictuary", as it were, separate from the library, but it's the same concept.

The UPA history book sounds like a good read indeed, and it's very nice to be able to get things like that on ILL. Say what you will, libraries are really pretty amazing when you think about it. :)

Very nice looking place you work at.
Your library looks like its been there a long time, and looks like an interesting place to work at.

A misconception I sometimes see, is that others sometimes seem to not remember those who maintain buildings and systems.
Maintenance has to be done, otherwise things will eventually quit working entirely.

Our libraries here are always busy, so I'd say that they are mostly staying relevant even in modern times. The only thing that can be difficult here is that it can be hard to find certain things in the system sometimes.

But overall, I've always liked going to the library, though I prefer the smaller and older buildings like the one you work at.

Thank you for what you do there. ^^

You're welcome! I love working in this building; it was completed in 1915 (the date over the front door is 1914) and so full of period ambiance. There are some additional pictures online (yelp https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/east-greenwich-free-library-east-greenwich ) but they aren't all up to date.

Very nice indeed. ^^
Reminds me of university buildings from that time period.
Seems like a good atmosphere to work in.

That is a beautiful library! It could pass for a church. You're lucky to have a career you love and have had for so many years. I was surprised by all the extras (cake pans, fishing tackle, stuff from other libraries and colleges, etc.) that your place offers to the public.

They have an amazing collection of cake pans, though I have never borrowed one :o)

We are directly across the street from a church (my St Luke’s) and the style is identical. The granite even came from the same quarry up the street from my house. The Church is 40 years older, but I think they wished to match it somewhat.

Nifty stuff! (love seeing the fireplaces back in use, and also hearing about all the things available to loan out!)

I love that we can have fires again, even if only gas ones. They add a bit of old school charm: a patron was knitting a blanket by one, yesterday.

I try to encourage folks to use their library resources. The internet has lots of info, but a librarian can really help sort the wheat from the chaff (of course I’m biased: my middle son is a Reference Librarian).

Always thought I would get there some day, my friend, and see both you and those incredible stained glass windows.
Unlikely now. Too bad.

Well, I've become somewhat of a hermit (excluding immediate family) IRL... but it is a shame you wouldn't see the windows.

Rabbit (Twitch) actually visited a year or two back. I was stressed trying to think what we could do and where we could meet (he had the family with him). It worked out swimmingly as is said: we actually met at the library after hours and got Chinese food for dinner.

And Happy Whelpy Day early, in case I don't get on in time :o)
