Why is indifference not a valid answer to the question? Why only love or hate?

Maybe I'd hold onto it for a little while before spending it, to see if anyone says they lost it. If it was mentioned or I was asked I would return it. I wouldn't try to find out who lost it, because it would be near-on impossible to tell whose it really is in the case of multiple claims.
