Beach [afternoon]

Jul 16, 2009 17:02

It had been an extremely long and musical day, which was why Ben had fled to the beach as soon as his classes were over in the hopes that the song Captain Kirk had been singing would eventually get out of his head.

Naturally, he'd been on the beach all of a minute when he'd gotten his wish.

Cut for lyrics. Contain your shock! )

things i won't tell tahiri about, this shouldn't be cute, wooooooooooe, kisses!, well that was awkward, once more with fandom, karla, tahiri

Karla had been walking up the beach, trying to find a place where, if she decided to burst out singing again, she wouldn't be around anyone else doing it.

Unfortunately, it sounded like someone else had had that same idea. She was about to turn around and go when she recognized Ben. Which pretty much killed any idea of leaving.

No, Ben, it wasn't.

"Right, yeah. Just the island making us sing stupid songs we don't actually mean," Karla said quickly. She scrambled to her feet. "Or, at least, confusing friendship with something else--which I'm certainly not," she promised.

And if Ben wasn't sure that was entirely truthful, he wasn't about to push it. Possibly ever.

"Of course not," he said. "I have Tahiri and you have Ender."

Um, Ben? No.

"I have who?!" Karla asked with disbelief.

[I just did a spittake on my laptop. Thank you for that.]

"Dark hair, dark eyes, very serious?" Ben replied. "Yours is the only name other than Val's that comes up in his conversation. I kind of figured--"

No, Ben.

Incredulous Karla is incredulous. "Ender?" she squeaked. She'd assumed he'd say Leda, if anyone, since she and Leda had been on a date or two, but Ender?!

"No, Ben. If Ender likes anyone, it'd be--" she glanced at him and rethought her statement, "--not me."

Oblivious Ben was oblivious. "Oh, okay. Never mind, then."

"Yeah. Never mind," Karla said, shoulders slumping slightly. "Let's just forget this entire thing ever happened. It's all just Fandom stupid, not worthy of further thought or mention."

Ben tried to catch her eyes. "Are you going to be okay?"

His empathy really had the worst timing.

Fortunately Karla had her shields up at max, and had ever since she'd started that blasted singing. "Me? Of course," she said, nonchalance cranked to eleven. "Why wouldn't I be? Just a bit of silliness of the Fandom persuasion." She laughed. "Still not sure why Fandom picked me to sing that song, but what are ya gonna do?"

"Certainly not dwell on it," Ben said lightly, wondering if that was going to work at all for the rest of the serenades he'd been a part of.

"Precisely," Karla said coolly. "No need to dwell. Or mention it to anyone. Or well, anything. Anyway, I've got to run. There's the possibility there's someone I haven't humiliated myself in front of."

Ben didn't recoil at the tone but his lips pursed. "It should wear off soon," he said, more out of hope than any real knowledge.

"One can only hope," Karla sighed. "I'll see you later, Ben."
