I was feeling all caring and decided that it was a good idea to insure my wine collection, since I'd hate to lose the $1000 deductible should anything go wrong with it

Disclaimer: I am not Canadian and I know more about commercial lines than I do personal. That still isn't a lot. No, really.
Google shows that Canada definitely provides wine collection insurance so refusing coverage as a collection because you drink it seems hinky. (And personally just ridiculous.) Insuring it as part of your personal contents may not be bad if the collection is a few bottles since you could raise the blanket limit. But if your collection is becoming worth more than all your other personal property combined or you were looking for this coverage in case of fluctuation of temperature, etc., I'd definitely ask another broker or go to the other insurance carriers. Or ask whoever sells the wine to you, maybe they'd have some insight.
It is possible that the insurance carrier may not be able to offer wine collection coverage because "collection" may be defined as a over a certain number of bottles or a certain $ amount and you don't qualify. But I'd still ask around.
See, here's the thing: I'm in this weird middle ground where my wine collection is worth an OK amount, i.e. more than 98% of the people I know, but less than my uncle's collection, and far less than Eddie Van Halen's collection.
I can completely understand not being covered because I actually drink the stuff.
It seems reasonable to think that the fact that it's rotated on a quasi-regular basis.
But if something went wrong, if I had even a $1000 deductible on the collection, I'd be hopping mad.
So really I was looking to get wine coverage as a collection to get rid of that nasty deductible. If I get it covered as part of my contents, maybe it won't be so bad a thing.
Fluctuating temperatures don't bother me that much because I've got one of those upright cellar thingies. It's more theft or fire or water damage that I fear.
Online tracking is handy, but I've found it challenging to find one that I love, rather than one I just tolerate. I hadn't heard of cellartracker, but I'm glad to hear that you've found it useful. Perhaps I'll give it a whirl some time.
I've recently switched from Wineisgood.com to WinesOrganizer.com, since the administrator for the former never updated the code and was hit by a couple of virus attacks.
WinesOrganizer has some things I'm not entirely pleased with: wines are organized by the name of the wine rather than the winery that makes them (WTF?), and there isn't a good single-sheet overview for your collection. But at least he's maintaining and developing the code. Maybe if I spam him enough he'll give into my every desire!
