I am quite fortunate that after 1 day preparing for Hurricane Irene and 2 days restoring my yard ornaments and picking up small branches my work and inconvenience is almost complete. I still have to put my blue bottle tree back together but other than that clean up is complete. A bonus may be a decrease in stink bugs but I am not sure about that

Dang! I somehow assumed all my US LJ-friends were on the west coast! Glad you're okay - and the bottle tree!

Those flamethrowers are very effective aren't they? My OH uses one to kill weeds with great enthusiasm.

For weeds they are especially good to kill the tiny ones without disturbing the soil and bringing more weed seed to the germination friendly zone. I've noticed a nice decrease in weeds over the years doing this.

If I am worried about a pest that is likely to have nymphs on the soil (or eggs) I will pass the flame over the soil prior to erecting a pest protection covered area (with netting or the cloth made for that).
