Chapter 1
Amidst the bustle of the busy airport, a young woman sat in the waiting area of the international terminal, engrossed in the book she was reading. She could be no more than 18 years old and yet she held an air of maturity about her. Oblivious to her surroundings, the girl did not realize that she had been attracting quite a bit of attention. She was quite a looker, with long raven-black hair that cascaded down to the middle of her back, a smooth complexion with large almond shaped eyes, a defined nose, and small but luscious lips. The combination of these features, added with her naturally smooth and straight hair, her calm demeanor, and her stylish clothes, could pass her as a successful model. It might be the glamorous aura about her or simply the way she carried herself, but even as she was minding her own business, a five year-old Asian girl curiously approached her. Noticing the coming footsteps through her peripheral vision, the she looked up, and her eyes reached a pair of curious yet adoring eyes. Having always enjoyed little children’s company, the woman automatically smiled, enticing a similar expression from the girl. After the girl conducted a full inspection, she nodded her head, apparently having decided something and sat down.

“Hey you! What’s your name?” The woman asked, smiling politely. She understood children well after volunteering at the orphanage for the past three years. She knew that children hated being referred to as “kiddo” or any other similarly degrading nicknames adults often used to refer to people who were simply younger than they were.

“I’m Nara. What’s your name?” she asked in return.

“I’m Adelle. Are you here with your parents?” A feeling of panic arose when the woman realized that no one seemed to be looking for her.

“Nope. I’m with my uncle though. He’s … ummm… well… he was right there sleeping,” she replied, pointing to an empty row of seats, “but I got bored and I saw you and you looked interesting so I came over,” she continued, completely relaxed for a child who had just lost her guardian. Regardless, her comment of Adelle being “interesting” elicited a small laughter from the older female.

“Well then, why don’t we go to the information center and try to find your uncle? Let’s…” Before she even finished her sentence, a tall, medium built man with auburn hair and an incredibly smooth complexion approached them, panting and out of breath.

“Nara!! The man exclaimed. The girl’s name was all Adelle could understand as he began to blurt one fast Korean phrase after another while simultaneously hugging and kissing Nara.

“Ewww, you’re drooling all over me! And I wasn’t kidnapped. I was talking to this nice pretty lady while you were snoring away. Adelle unni, meet my uncle Junsu. Uncle Junsu, this is Adelle unni,” Nara gestured first to Junsu and then to Adelle, continuing to speak in English.

“Nice to meet you.” Adelle smiled, offering Junsu her hand.

“Nice to meet you, too. And thanks for taking care of Nara.” Junsu thanked her in a heavily accented but correct English, giving her a firm hand shake and smiled back.

“No problem, she’s a cute girl. So is it just the two of you? Where are you heading?”asked Adelle, politely trying to start a conversation.

“We’re going back to Korea. We were just here for vacation. I can’t wait to give her back to her parents. She doesn’t get tired! I mean… she’s only five for goodness sake, how can something so small have so much energy?” Junsu suddenly burst out, passionately relieving his stress for the past week. Seeing the surprised look on Adelle’s face for his outburst, he mentally slapped himself in the head for losing his cool. “Sorry, it’s just that this disappearance act wasn’t the first. I guess it was the last straw. I wouldn’t know how to explain to her parents if she was lost.” Adelle chuckled lightly. Junsu suddenly felt his knees buckled slightly though he could not figure out why.

“It’s okay. I know how kids can be. I used to work with them. But, I have to ask you. I didn’t know your twin brother was married,” she inquired, with head slightly tilted. This question brought a slight grimace to Junsu’s face.

“Oh, this is my friend’s sister’s daughter. We’re really close, so she calls me uncle. Wait!” All of the sudden, with his eyes squinted in alarm and distrust, he asked, “How do you know that I have a twin brother?”

“Are you not Xiah Junsu from the Korean group Dong Bang Shin Gi?” asked Adelle again, this time confused.

“Who are you? Have you been following us?” Junsu questioned, suspicious of the beautiful, petite woman in front of him while stepping in front of Nara protectively. Hearing this and seeing the change of expression on Junsu’s face, Adelle was offended and stiffened immediately.

“Well, I’m sorry if I was wrong, but I did not “follow you” as you have so wrongly accused me of doing. Your lovely niece was the one who thought that I was “interesting” and dropped me a visit for a chat, seeing as her uncle ignored her and fell asleep.” Adelle ignored Junsu’s wince and Nara’s pleading. “I refused to be accused like I’m some kind of a criminal. Now if you don’t mind, I was here first. Goodbye” Adelle coldly replied, turning her head away. Hearing the explanation, Junsu felt guilty. Nara burst out crying seeing her pretty unni suddenly acting so cold toward them. Adelle had always had a soft spot for children, especially cute crying children such as Nara. She could not be angry for long anyway so she faced them again, the look of anger fading away, and saw Junsu standing in front of her with a remorseful expression.

“Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be so accusing of you. It’s just that I can see that you’re not Korean and we’re in the U.S. so I thought you were some kind of paparazzi trying to cover Dong Bang Shin Gi’s very brief vacation break. I’m really sorry. Forgive me?” he pleaded, down on his knees, complete with that irresistible face that only Xiah Junsu could muster. Adelle, whose anger had already faded and was now simply embarrassed by the outrageous public display, finally gave in and smiled. Seeing her smile, Junsu grinned triumphantly and sat next to her. Together with Adelle, he tried to calm little Nara down. After a series of long pleadings and 2 scoops of double chocolate ice cream later, Nara was back to her cheery self. Both Junsu and Adelle sighed with relief.

“Well…”

“Sorry…” They had both started talking at once. After a moment of silence, they exchanged a glance and exploded in laughter. Nara peered at the two adults through her giant ice cream cone and shook her head with disinterest.

“Wow, she IS quite a handful.”

“Told you. I can’t wait to go back. But then, it’s also the end of my vacation,” said Junsu with an unreadable expression on his face.

“Why the expression? You don’t like performing for us?” asked Adelle jokingly.

“NO! Of course I love performing. I love the fans. Without them the group and I wouldn’t be here. We owe it all to… Wait a minute, you said ‘us.’ What do you mean by us?”

“Well, us, your fans,” replied Adelle with an almost incredulous expression.

“You’re a fan? You’re OUR fan? Seriously?” exclaimed Junsu, now excited. His immediate change of expression amused Adelle greatly.

“Yeah! I have all of your albums. In fact, I’m going to your concert in Malaysia next month.” Adelle paused, gauging Junsu’s reaction for a minute before adding, “Why do you seem so surprised?”

“It’s just that…well you’re not… I mean I’m not used to… WOW!” Junsu took a deep breath, speechless. However, he soon realized that a “wow” wasn’t exactly the explanation the confused girl in front of him wanted. He explained, “It’s just that I’m so used to the teenagers who scream and run, you know? Not the sit and talk like a normal person type, which is what you are. This has got to be the first and I have to say, it’s much nicer,” said Junsu, grinning and staring intensely at Adelle. She held his eyes for a moment until she finally had to look away, her cheeks flushed.

“Yeah, well, as normal as I am, if you keep looking at me like that, I might resort to the scream and run type.” Adelle laughed nervously and began to turn to look at Junsu again when she heard the announcement of the final boarding call for the Cathay Pacific flight heading to Hong Kong. She jumped in surprise and gathered her carry-ons.

“Ohmigosh, that’s my flight! We’ve been so engrossed in chatting that I’ve completely lost track of things. I’ve gotta go. When’s your flight?”

“Oh, don’t worry. It’s still a half hour from now. But wait! Can I have…” Junsu was unable to finish his sentence because Adelle zoomed past him to the boarding gate. He had wanted to ask was her number, or at least her e-mail address. He liked her. She was nothing like the girls he had met in the past. She was intelligent, nice, and not to mention, very pretty. And now, he didn’t even have anything to remember her by. As he looked back to the gate from which Adelle boarded, he saw her running back toward him with a piece of paper and a pen. As she approached, she grinned,

“Well, as normal of a fan I am, I would be stupid if I didn’t at least ask you for your autograph,” gasped Adelle, out of breath. Junsu automatically took the pen, signed the piece of paper on her hands, and gave it back to the delighted girl. Adelle then bid her goodbye to little Nara with a hug and a kiss on her cheek. Then, she hugged and kissed Junsu on the cheek, screamed, and ran. Junsu, who was surprised by her abrupt actions, could only look dumbly at Adelle’s running form. A grimace formed on his face when she turned around at the gate and yelled, “JUNSU OPPA!!!! SARANGHEYO!!!!”

Not long after that commotion, another type of frantic yelling was heard from the crowd gathered on his right side. These were the passengers, mostly young girls, going on the same flight as Junsu.

He cursed lightly before picking up an amused Nara and ran for his life, with hysterical girls trailing after him. ‘Where are the security guards when you need them?’ Regardless of the life-threatening situation that Adelle has put him in, he smiled, “That Adelle, she’s definitely something. Good thing I’m in good shape.” Then, he looked back and a look of terror filled his face as the fans gained on him.

Meanwhile, Adelle who was already sitting comfortably in business class on her long flight to Hong Kong, and later, Indonesia, was smiling contentedly to herself as she read the piece of paper on her hand, “To: Adelle. For such a pretty girl, I give you an equally pretty face to remember me by: ^^v. For my “normal” fan. -XIAH JUNSU-

Her fingers brushed against the last sentence, a strange feeling in her heart as she read it. Dismissing it quickly as leftover endorphins, she thought instead about what she did. She felt almost guilty for the trouble she had just caused him before she left. Almost. The girl looked out the window into the night sky, grinned one more time, and fell asleep.
