May I also suggest that you ask Miss Beth if she can put you in touch with other parents who have been down this road, so that you can learn from their mistakes (if any)?
I have someone in my life with it that was never diagnosed (although I am quite certain he has it) and I wish he had been on the drugs to help him at least until he had learned to modify behavior. I'm glad that you have treatment options that could make a difference for him.
I would most definitely get a second opinion. Last year, when the principal suggested the boys may have ADD or a learning disability, I spoke to their pedi. he said it's VERY difficult to diagnose ADD in kids this age- and the ones he has seen have been blatantly obvious and in immediate need of meds.
One thing I've heard recently is that kids with high intelligence/creativity, are prone to 'disorders' such as ADHD and OCD. One downside to the meds is that while they treat the 'disorder' but at the same time, stifle the creativity and curiosity. this is not to say that if he needs the meds, you shouldn't give it to him- just get as many opinions as you need to be 100% comfortable with yoru decision.
oh man! that sucks. You're doing everything I would do- research, research, research, so that when you decide where to start on this you can feel confident and informed.
I agree that the 2nd opinion is prudent, but I'm glad that you're being so proactive when it comes to all Ethan's challenges. It sounds to me like you're being open-minded and not instantly banning any outcomes, and I think that's the attitude that will serve Ethan and your whole family best. *hugs* to you, and stay strong, girlie.
