Have something cheap and easy, boxed grits or something, and before he sees it, place it in an unlabeled container, like a tupperware. Anytime he thinks his dinos need food, tell him that you went to Petsmart and bought dino food, and then present the grits to him.

Explain that you've spoken to a veterinarian, and that because these are PLASTIC dinosaurs, they need plastic food, otherwise they'll get very, very ill. (Tell him they'll get scurvy, that way you can google it for him and he'll believe you, LOL.)
