Forgetting Sarah Marshall

After a long hiatus (due to lack of any decent films, and the Fringe) we finally went back to the movies last night. Well, quuux and I did, anyway :)

The quick plot synopsis: Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) is the music score writer for the TV show Crime Scene, and he's been dating its star, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) for 5 and a half years. One day, out of the blue, she dumps him - and Peter is devastated. After a series of unsatisfying one-night-stands, he knows he needs to do something in order to get over his time with Sarah. So he goes on holiday to Hawaii, only to find himself in the same hotel as Sarah and her new boyfriend, popstar Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Despite his proximity to his heartbreaking ex, Peter tries to have a good time and move on, mostly with the help of the hotel's friendly staff, especially beautiful receptionist Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis). Of course, comedy ensues.

This isn't an over-the-top farce, full of crazy situations and coincidences, nor is it a revenge-based story - Peter is a genuinely nice guy, and just wants to get past Sarah, despite feeling that he's still in love. Of course, the humour comes from the writing (also Jason Segel) and the variety of off the wall side characters (hotel staff and guests) that Peter interacts with. It's a little more toned down than Knocked Up (although a lot of the same cast appear), but there are plenty of great moments where I was giggling for quite a bit.

I wouldn't say this movie is groundbreaking in any way (heck, even puppet musicals have been done before) but it's certainly worth it for entertainment value.

8.5/10
